This breakout collection is part of the new movement of Science Fiction and Fantasy Art into the art show world. Christian was thrilled to participate in the event.

Warner Bros in negotiations for The Red Star!!!

We are thrilled to announce that Warner Bros is in negotiations to pick up the Soviet-themed sci-fi fantasy comic book series The Red Star, which had been put into turnaround by Universal.

Neal Moritz and his Original Films banner are attached to produce as is Jason Netter of comic-centric shingle Kickstart Productions.

The lavish comic, created by Christian Gossett, first appeared in 1999 and is set in an alternate USSR where futuristic technology and magical elements co-exist. The main character is a soldier in the Red Fleet and his wife, who become keys to defeating a former brutal ruler and his minions.

Concept Design: Alice in Wonderland

TIM BURTON'S ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Richard Taylor once said to me (before he was officially Sir Richard, but fast on his way) that "About 30 percent of the work we do makes it to the screen". He said so with great pride of workmanship, and he knew that the same could be said of many other departments on a given film.

One of the points he was making was just how massive a commitment of resources it takes to create a believable cinematic world; to quantify, in an accessible way, the incredible investment of talent and discipline necessary to find the kinds of specific solutions required to give the audience a satisfying experience. It isn't about getting it all on screen, it's about finding a comprehensive set of designs that are unified and that tell the story the Director wants to tell.

I mentioned this anecdote at Gallery Nucleus during the 'Alice' event they did, and Dylan Cole (who is not yet a knight but might be someday) agreed with the number, although he (also proudly, see what I'm saying about this pride of workmanship thing?) thought it was more like 20%.

So, with great pride (wink) here are two pieces from my 80% file. These Wrought Iron Horses, Pegasus' and Unicorns came to mind one day while we were tasked with dreaming up the White Queen's army.

The talented Kat Dias collaborated with me on the first one. Hey Kat!

The happy ending here is that there is no ending. These concepts are being applied on another project as I write this. Bwahahahaha.

It was a cool idea, they were going to make a special sculpt as a gift for some of the team members and were looking for ideas. This first one was an homage to Mike Zecc.

This second one I thought I'd be a bit more brutal.

The concept was that the viewer is the boss who hired Niko Bellic to scare this guy, and now Niko was waiting to decide whether you were going to give the kill signal or be merciful.

Obviously Niko couldn't care either way, and has so little respect for his victim that he's standing with both feet planted on the guy.

Note the CEO is also begging the viewer, horrified by his badly broken thumb. I tried to make him look like your typical white collar criminal, and, appropriately, he ended up looking like Ken Lay...

Hey, while I'm here I'd like to thank everybody I met at Bill Geradts' ARMAGEDDON these past two weekends.

We had a great time in Wellington and Christchurch, and I hope that all of you who presented drawings to me at the show will please stay in touch.

Ancient Horseman

I'm teaching myself to draw Horses.

I can't believe how much fun they are. Difficult as hell so far, but I've decided to make them a feature of the repertoire.

There'll be lots of good, bad and ugly horses posted over the next few months...

Simon Schama, the art historian made famous by his BBC specials, refers to the artistic and symbolic significance of horses in his 'Power of Art' series.

Not that it profits me other than by spreading the good word about a mini-series that is so culturally enriching, but I strongly recommend you purchase Simon Schama's Power of Art.

If you don't believe me, I dare you to google it and read the reviews. Yeah, you read right. I dared ya.

A very OLD sketch :)

This is a favorite of mine, as proved by the fact that I really do not have much artwork from my young days. For those of you brilliant people who were among the early adapters to Roleplaying Games, the reminiscence that follows below won't seem overly geeky.

I drew this when I was 16 years old.

The character was from my friend Dean's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons campaign. While playing a previous game session, my character had made a huge score inside a dungeon and took his share of the loot to design this suit of custom armor. :)

It was awesome. The character was a straight Fighter, so I designed the suit to cast some support spells. :) (Wow! I am so geeking the hell out right now!)

Anyway, the support spells were built into the armor. There were five gems adorning it (those round areas with the Katagana on the gauntlets, belt, chest and helmet.) Each gem cast an attack spell when saying a command word.

For those of you ubergenre classicists, you'll be able to recognize EXACTLY what piece of cult movie history those particular Japanese letters are taken from. The big hint is on the upper-arm plates.

Yes, the character under all that armor was based on a certain role played by the great Peter Weller from a movie in the mid-80's that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED.

I decided that this character's ability to dimensionally travel (oh no, I'm not saying his name. You brilliant people can take these clues to google and figure it out. :) sent him hurtling through a rift and into the fabled lands of Greyhawk. Which is where Dean's campaign was based.

To celebrate this new level of power, this drawing was made. That little portrait box on the character sheet just didn't cut it!

Defender of Archangel

Troika, devourer of souls, figures largely in the remaining chapters of The Red Star. As Skyfurnace Konstantinov comes ever closer to launching their attack on the fortress of the Archangel, so does their confrontation with the mighty Troika.

The name Troika was chosen in part for its historical reference.

In the early days of the KGB, a political prisoner was interrogated under severe torture for 24 hours a day. This was done in three shifts, by three different interrogators working eight hours each.

These three man torture teams were nicknamed 'Troikas'.

This is Roza, the Summoner we met in Sword of Lies #2. She's part of a reconnaissance unit that drives an armored car that they've affectionately named 'The Boar'.

Roza was a privileged daughter of the Aristocracy, but left that world behind for the sacrifice and toil of life as a revolutionary, fighting for the rights of the people.

The Red Star is, for the most part, a series of sketches done separately and composited together into pages. The page layouts are planned beforehand, but changes do happen. Certain drawings work out more nicely than I'd imagined, and others prove impossible.

This closeup of Makita was first published in PRISON OF SOULS (Book III of The Red Star) and the actual drawing is about 8 inches in height.
